Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Thursday, 22 October 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

It was a night to forget for Manchester United, who were thrashed 4-1 by Como in the Champions League league phase. The result leaves Michael Carrick under growing scrutiny, though Peter Schmeichel insisted the former midfielder is in no immediate danger of the sack, with Old Trafford's hierarchy said to still view him as the club's long-term man. Como boss Cesc Fabregas, meanwhile, batted away questions linking him to the United job ahead of kick-off, saying he would not disrespect Carrick by commenting on the speculation.

Arsenal were held to a 2-2 draw by Bayern München in Munich, a result overshadowed by an injury to Bukayo Saka, who went off in the 10th minute after hurting his left thigh while playing a pass. Mikel Arteta said afterwards that the issue "doesn't look good at all," a worrying update for Gunners fans with a congested fixture list looming.

Elsewhere in Europe's top competition, Real Madrid thumped RB Leipzig 4-1, Aston Villa won 3-1 away at Viking, Inter edged Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0, Club Brugge beat Lens 3-0, Real Betis saw off Feyenoord 1-0, Galatasaray won 4-2 at Lille, and Sporting CP lost 3-2 at home to LASK in one of the shocks of the round.

In the Premier League picture, Manchester City remain the division's only unbeaten side, sitting top on a perfect record with Arsenal their closest challengers. Tottenham climbed off the foot of the table earlier in the week, James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scoring in a 3-1 win over Coventry City that eased some of the pressure on Thomas Frank's side.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football: Europa & Conference League action

Four English clubs are in continental action tonight. In the Europa League, Crystal Palace travel to Vodafone Park to face Besiktas, kicking off at , while Bournemouth host in-form AC Milan at the Vitality Stadium from , looking to back up their perfect start to the group phase. In the Conference League, Brighton are away at Jablonec and Sunderland travel to Poland to face Lech Poznań, with both matches kicking off at .

Horse racing: Carlisle and Newmarket headline

It's a strong jumps card at Carlisle, where eight races run from through to , topped by the Listed Panoramic Hurdle. On the Flat, Newmarket stages an eight-race card from to on the July course, while smaller cards take place at Ffos Las and on the all-weather at Southwell.

Other sport: eyes on Austin

Formula 1 heads to the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas this weekend, with the race on Sunday. Andrea Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' standings, ahead of George Russell and Lewis Hamilton, with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris still in the title mix with six rounds remaining.

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Bel Amigo to win the 13:52 Carlisle — 7/2 (Betfred)

Selection: Bel Amigo, 13:52 Carlisle. Reasoning: Betfred's Lucky 15 selection and the Racing Post handicappers' nap of the day, Bel Amigo should strip fitter for last month's reappearance at Perth and looks well enough treated to register a fourth career win over course and distance.

2. Arbaawy to win the 14:55 Newmarket — 9/2 (Paddy Power)

Selection: Arbaawy, 14:55 Newmarket (1m 2f handicap). Reasoning: A Timeform-backed pick on the July course, Arbaawy is a leading contender in a race in which stable companion Kalokalo is also fancied, but the each-way value looks to sit with Arbaawy at this price.

3. Both teams to score — Besiktas v Crystal Palace, 1/2 (Betway)

Selection: BTTS Yes, Europa League, kick-off 21:00. Reasoning: Palace have scored in both of their league-phase games so far and Besiktas are porous at the back at Vodafone Park, making a goal at both ends the most likely outcome of a game Besiktas are favoured to edge overall.

4. Bournemouth to beat AC Milan — 21/20 (William Hill)

Selection: Bournemouth win, Europa League, kick-off 20:00. Reasoning: The Cherries have taken maximum points from their opening two league-phase fixtures and go into this one full of confidence on home soil against a Milan side yet to win in the competition.

5. Sunderland to win at Lech Poznań — 9/13 (Sky Bet)

Selection: Sunderland win, Conference League, kick-off 18:45. Reasoning: Sunderland go into this as clear favourites on current form and should have enough craft to see off a Lech Poznań side who have struggled for consistency domestically this season.

Player news & injury updates

Saka injury clouds Arsenal's week

Bukayo Saka's withdrawal early on against Bayern München with a thigh problem is the headline worry at the Emirates. Mikel Arteta's blunt assessment — that it "doesn't look good at all" — will concern a club already managing a packed autumn schedule, with scans awaited to determine the length of any absence.

Treatment room concerns at Manchester City

Manager Enzo Maresca confirmed Antoine Semenyo faces up to eight weeks out with a knee ligament issue sustained in the 3-2 win over Ipswich Town, while Matheus Nunes and Mateo Kovačić also went off injured in that game. Erling Haaland, who was seen limping at the final whistle, has been given the all-clear to face AEK Athens in the Champions League next Tuesday.

Double injury blow for Liverpool

Liverpool beat Brentford 2-1 but came away with fresh injury worries, as Jeremie Frimpong suffered a new hamstring injury just seven minutes after coming on, with manager Andoni Iraola confirming he is unlikely to feature again before the November international break. Dominik Szoboszlai also missed the closing stages with a recurrence of a hamstring issue.

Martinez a fresh concern for under-pressure Carrick

Lisandro Martinez lasted only 45 minutes of United's 1-1 draw at Leeds before being withdrawn with thigh discomfort, adding to a lengthy absentee list that already includes Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo. The knock comes at an awkward time for Michael Carrick, with results and performances under the microscope after the Como defeat.

Porro boost for Tottenham ahead of Chelsea clash

Spurs have one piece of good news on the injury front, with head coach Thomas Frank saying Pedro Porro could be available for Saturday's Premier League meeting with Chelsea, having missed recent fixtures. His return would be a timely lift for a Tottenham side building momentum after Sunday's win over Coventry City.
