Betfan Daily Sports Briefing — Sunday, 18 October 2026

Published · By Betfan Editorial

Yesterday's results & headlines

Saturday's Premier League programme produced five games and no shortage of drama. Chelsea won 2-0 away at Everton, with Pedro Neto scoring either side of half-time — the first just 43 seconds after the restart from a deflected Jorrel Hato cross, the second from a rebounded Henderson free kick. It was Xabi Alonso's first league away win in charge and Chelsea's first clean sheet in 23 league matches, though the afternoon was overshadowed by a serious-looking head injury to goalkeeper Emi Martínez.

Manchester City edged a seven-goal thriller 3-2 against Ipswich Town, with Phil Foden and a double from Erling Haaland seeing off replies from Daizen Maeda and a late Zian Flemming penalty. Haaland's second strike made him the fastest player in Premier League history to reach 100 non-penalty goals, and the win made Enzo Maresca the first manager to win his opening seven league games in charge of a club.

Elsewhere, Aston Villa won 1-0 at Newcastle United through a first-half header from Johan Manzambi — a player Newcastle had been linked with signing before Villa moved first — while Liverpool came from behind to beat Brentford 2-1 and Fulham edged out newly-promoted Hull City 1-0. Manchester City lead the table on 21 points from seven games, six clear of Arsenal.

Today's fixtures & previews

Football

Four Premier League fixtures complete Matchweek 7. At , AFC Bournemouth host Sunderland, Brighton & Hove Albion entertain Crystal Palace in an M23 derby, and Leeds United — unbeaten at home all season — welcome a struggling Manchester United. The headline fixture arrives at , when Nottingham Forest host runaway early pace-setters Arsenal at the City Ground, with the Gunners having won nine of their first ten games this season.

Horse racing

Jump racing dominates the British card at Sedgefield, where seven races run from to . The feature is the 3m5f bet365 Durham National Handicap Chase at , headed by former winner Tommie Beau and last season's Lincolnshire National winner Red Delta. Flat racing runs at Leopardstown in Ireland across seven races from 14:12 to 17:12 on good going, and jumps action also continues at Limerick.

Golf

The DP World Tour's India Championship reaches its final round at Delhi Golf Club, with Spain's Eugenio Chacarra two clear of Joost Luiten and Angel Hidalgo heading into Sunday's closing holes. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy, the highest-ranked British or Irish interest in the field, began the final round well adrift of the lead.

Betting tips & odds analysis

18+ | Bet responsibly | BeGambleAware.org | Tips are opinion, not guaranteed. Only stake what you can afford to lose. Odds quoted at time of writing and subject to change.

1. Arsenal to win @ 8/13 (Bet365)

Selection: Arsenal to beat Nottingham Forest, 16:30 kick-off at the City Ground. Reasoning: Forest are yet to score a home league goal this season and Arsenal have won nine of their first ten fixtures across all competitions. Short price, but the form gap is stark enough to make it a solid banker.

2. Both teams to score – No @ 5/4 (Sky Bet)

Selection: BTTS No in Brighton v Crystal Palace, 14:00 kick-off. Reasoning: Brighton are heavy favourites at home (8/15 with Bet365) in this M23 derby and Palace have struggled for goals on the road this autumn — a comfortable home win without reply is the more likely shape of this game than a shootout.

3. Leeds United to win @ 27/20 (Bet365)

Selection: Leeds to beat Manchester United, 14:00 kick-off at Elland Road. Reasoning: Daniel Farke's side are unbeaten in all three home league games this season and sit seventh, while Michael Carrick's United arrive 13th with just six points from six — this looks a good spot for the home side to claim a second straight league win at Elland Road.

4. Tommie Beau each-way @ 9/2 (bet365) — 15:20 Sedgefield

Selection: Tommie Beau e/w in the bet365 Durham National Handicap Chase. Reasoning: A former winner of this exact race who has also placed third and fourth in it in the past two years, Tommie Beau clearly relishes this track and distance over 3m5f — each-way cover makes sense given the field's depth of course specialists.

5. Red Delta each-way @ 8/1, 2 places (William Hill) — 15:20 Sedgefield

Selection: Red Delta e/w in the same Durham National. Reasoning: Last season's Lincolnshire National winner, Red Delta won first time out at Sedgefield over an even longer trip last term and is only 5lb higher than when he scored at Market Rasen on Boxing Day — with Brian Hughes taking the ride, there's solid each-way appeal at a double-figure each-way price.

Player news & injury updates

Martínez injury concern at Chelsea

Chelsea's win at Goodison Park was clouded by a serious-looking head injury to goalkeeper Emi Martínez, who required lengthy on-pitch treatment. His availability for Chelsea's next fixture is a doubt pending further assessment, with Reece James also already out through injury.

Liverpool's growing treatment-room list

Liverpool head into the new week carrying six injury absences. Dominik Szoboszlai, only just back from a muscular problem, was forced off early again during Saturday's win over Brentford, adding fresh concern ahead of the international break.

Everton assessing Branthwaite and Mykolenko

Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite needs a late fitness assessment after a knock sustained against Hull City, while Vitalii Mykolenko has stepped up his recovery and is now a doubt rather than a definite absentee.

Newcastle's absentee list persists

Eddie Howe remains without Anthony Elanga, Tino Livramento and Jacob Ramsey following Saturday's defeat to Villa, while Bazoumana Touré is improving but will again be a late call.

Transfer gossip: Merino linked with Real Madrid

Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino has been named as a surprise target for Real Madrid, while wider January gossip continues to link Declan Rice's former club and others with moves involving Martín Zubimendi, Alejandro Balde and Jules Koundé.
