Ante Post Thoughts For 2018 - By Rick Elliott

The turn of the year is a good time to look forward and here are some ante post wagers for 2018. It’s a World Cup year but it’s debatable whether the tournament should be played in Russia. Even on sporting grounds it was a strange decision because in my opinion the World Cup hosts should have a genuine chance of winning the tournament. Russia are currently at number 64 in the world rankings which means they have no chance. Only Brazil and Germany have won the World Cup out of their own continent which means the world champions in 2018 are highly likely to be a European nation. FRANCE have only won the World Cup at home but they can become the world champions for the second time in 2018 and 6/1 with Paddy Power looks fair.

The racing over Christmas has produced more questions than answers but it now seems that Buveur D’Air only has to turn up and jump eight obstacles to win the 2018 Champion Hurdle. The demise of Sizing John and the result of the King George mean MIGHT BITE is a worthy favourite for the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The horse has done some crazy things in the past but has now matured into a solid chaser so must be backed at 7/2 with William Hill to win the Gold Cup. The Grand National has a history of producing winners and placed horses who are proven over the unique fences. BLAKLION was fourth in the race in 2017 and loved the track when winning the Becher Chase in December. The horse is the ante post bet for the National at 10/1 with Ladbrokes.

The Ryder Cup is being played in France in 2018 for the first time. The matches will feature three players who could be winning majors and regular tournaments during the year. Rickie Fowler, Jon Rahm and Rory McIlroy are three to follow in money list betting on the European and USPGA Tours. These are not exactly new names but you can get decent odds for each of them to win the tournaments and titles that matter most in 2018. The subplot to the golfing year is the form of Tiger Woods but that’s subject to a great deal of speculation. Fowler, Rahm and McIlroy are proven and can have great seasons in the majors and Race to Dubai and FedEx Cup. At the height of the winter these ante post pointers can provide plenty of fun and very good odds.
