The Power Could Be Honoured Tonight - By Rick Elliott
No bookmaker is offering odds on the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement award at tonight’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year ceremony that is taking place in Liverpool. The honour is not decided by a public vote and somebody somewhere knows the name of the recipient. It was reported in the media that “the choice this year does smack of it being a consolation prize for never winning the trophy itself” and in that context there are several obvious contenders.
Wayne Rooney is now the record scorer for England and Manchester United but his career is not over and in fact the odds of him being in England’s World Cup squad have fallen from 33/1 to 10/1 with Ladbrokes. Mo Farah retired from the track but he is in the running for the main honour and he is 40/1 with Betfair to win the overall title. That leaves the darts player PHIL TAYLOR who was second to Tony McCoy in 2010. Taylor retires from the sport after the PDC World Championship and his achievement in winning the world title 16 times is unlikely to be matched during his lifetime. Anthony Joshua is nailed on to named this year’s sports personality of the year.
Before the ceremony at the Echo Arena there are two matches in the Premier League that bring together home teams at the wrong end of the table and opponents in the running for Champions League qualification. It would be straightforward to back Manchester United at West Brom and Liverpool at Bournemouth in a DOUBLE at 6/4 and sometimes it’s unwise to ignore the obvious. However, United struggled to beat an efficient Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Wednesday and Liverpool have dropped four points in their last two home matches so this is a double to avoid.
Ireland yet again stages the best Sunday racing with a decent card at Navan and a fixture at Thurles while its All Weather sport at Chelmsford City and a low grade jumps meeting at Southwell in Britain. The Grade 2 Navan Novice Hurdle (12.50pm) looks like a match between two promising horses. Next Destination won a similar contest at the track last month but CRACKING SMART is open to improvement and is the standout racing bet of the day at 11/8 with William Hill.
