I went to my first pink ball cricket match at Hove on Monday. It’s a new plan to boost crowds at county games. They start a 2pm with lunch at 4, followed by tea at 6 and then continue under lights until close of play at about 10pm.

It was very busy during the first day especially as Sussex let in 600 school children free to get a taste of the game. The problem is the next day the heavens opened and it was a wash out so we can only hope the third and fourth days get better weather as cricket is so dependant on nice weather.

As I mentioned above it’s great for all sports to open their doors to encourage youngsters and it seems to me that the I.T.V racing team have that in mind having watched the coverage during Royal Ascot. They are far more entertaining than the previous bores over at Channel 4.

Ed Chamberlain is a great anchor and works well with the excellent Francesca Cumani and Jason Weaver plus Matt Chapman and Luke Harvey add the entertainment value. Oh I nearly forgot Oli Bell who ran on to the track after the Gold Cup and when speaking to the Queen she said were you the lunatic that ran on the track to congratulate your uncles winner.

Now I only backed the odd winner at the Royal meeting but the racing was of such high quality that the betting side came secondary to watching races like the Gold Cup with the gallant Big Orange holding on in a driving finish. The only down side was the Queens Dartmouth leading into the straight in the Hardwick only to be run out of it in the final two furlongs.

Last weeks Howies Hottie Who Dares Wins ran well with no cigar so lets see what we can do this week. I’m going to wait for Saturdays Northumberland Plate the 3.30 Newcastle which used to be called the Pitmans Derby. The tip is Brian Ellisons Seymour who has been running well on ground firmer than ideal and he will appreciate the return to an artificial surface in a race he has run well in the past. The only thing we need in our favour would be a low draw as that’s a big advantage at Newcastle on the round track.

Ronald R trainer M.Bell - A slow start cost him victory at Ascot as once in the clear he was catching the winner.

Librisa Breeze trainer D.Ivory - Finished strongly in the Golden Jubilee and as this was his first run of the year he should improve especially with softer ground.

Rat Catcher trainer Lisa Williamson - Finished well at Brighton and well handicapped.

Pushkins Museum trainer P.Morris - Led until collared close home and looks weighted to win soon.
