With every Saturday the Cheltenham Festival gets nearer, hardly a day goes by without Willie Mullins releasing a statement to say another of his horses is injured and won’t run till Cheltenham. When pushed they always seem to be minor injuries don’t they that will mean they can still run in March.

What does he train the horses on, Nails? I’m never known anything like it, come March we could see four or even five favourites turn up who we haven’t seen for nearly a year. A real poser for us as punters and of course a disaster for the sport because if he were to win say four of those races then he will stick to the tactic and we won’t see them again till next year. We’ve been here before of course with Quevega who was always reported as sluggish not working well etc then turned up in the paddock at Cheltenham looking like an equine Ferrari and jogged round to win easily. It’s all very strange and all very sad, imagine if Manchester United played one match a year, what would that do for football?

Right lets think about horses that are actually having a run round and it’s a really exciting day with quality cards at Sandown and up at Musselburgh. It’s their biggest Jumps day of the year and BetFan’s very own Tartan Tipster Jimmy Welsh will be there I understand offering all BetFan Newsletter Readers over the age of 65 a dram of Whisky on him, just approach him in the paddock. I see in the small print he says both parents must be present for the offer to stand, still for such a notoriously mean man it’s a lovely gesture.

One race Jimmy and the other spectators will be watching closely is the Scottish County Hurdle at 3.15 and the horse we must be on is the favourite Drumcliff. Harry Fry trains this hugely exciting prospect and he will relish this better ground and speedy track. Noel Fehily who is riding at the top of his game will be able to bring this one through late and fast and I fully expect him to win well. Fry is no mug and you can hardly keep the grin off his face when he is asked about this horse. 5/2 with BetVictor looks very tasty.

So lets have a fun informative and profitable weekend and if you are at Musselburgh lets hope you see a very flustered man being approached by one old person with two other very old people!

Back next week unless I have a minor injury that won’t keep me away from the festival!
