At the risk of repeating myself… I said at the risk of repeating myself… (see what I did there!) we’ve smashed it up again this week on the Simon Holden Racing Club.
I was made aware last Saturday night of the confidence behind the Mullins runners Djakadam and American Tom who I was told was Mullins Ankle horse! They both landed the Max bets!
Djakadam ridden by Walsh jumped superbly and never looked like getting beat. He has finished second in two Gold Cups, won a sack full of big money races in Ireland yet strangely seems an underrated and undervalued by the public horse. He looks at his absolute peak and if it came up soft he would be my idea of the Gold Cup winner as he will surely be ridden by Ruby Walsh which is never a bad thing at the festival.
I bow to no one in my admiration for Ruby the jockey but is it me or is he getting more sullen and sarcastic by the year. He seems to resent any form of questioning which is odd. I’ve spent some time in his company alongside my stats man the Prof. He is so miserable he makes Walsh seem like Michael Macintyre. And let me tell you Walsh like a lot of winners is an intense driven almost sullen man. I just think in this the twilight of his career it would be nice if he looked like he was enjoying it a bit more. After all you are a long time retired.
It would be remiss not to mention the terrible loss of the Choirboy Walter Swinburn gone far too young. Walter in the words of our former Columnist Mike Cattermole was a troubled genius and had slipped from public view in latter years. But lets not forget his sheer artistry in the saddle. People say anyone could have won on Shergar and the Choirboy himself would probably agree however watch the replay of his win on Lamtarra in the same race and name me three other jockeys who would have settled that horse and got it home. You will be lucky if you even get to two. Goodnight Choirboy you are forever part of the history of this great sport and racing could and should have watched your back better in latter years.
Ascot stage a superb pre Xmas card today and one horse I’m looking forward to seeing back over the big fences on decent ground is Cad du Berlais in the 1.15. Paul Nicholls has his team in blistering form and this horse was electric when winning a hurdle race at Aintree earlier this year on similar ground to today. Last time out he got stuck in the mud of Haydock on a wretched day. I understand he was given a break after that and has been turned out before coming back in to full work. This is a seriously talented chaser who won the Paddy Power at Cheltenham. He is 4/1 which is a whopping price largely because of the presence of Top Notch who is even money. Top notch was a talented hurdler but his Chase wins have come at Plumpton and Warwick against rubbish opposition whereas Cad du Berlais has done the business in big tough Saturday handicaps. I’m far from Sam Twiston Davies’s biggest fan but I think he should be able to point and go when it’s needed on this one and I fully expect him to win.
