Hi ,

One of the busiest and most exciting days of the year and I don’t mean the Labour Leadership contest I mean July Cup Day and Smiths day at York.

When they moved the July Cup to the Saturday many thought it would devalue the Smiths Day up at Ball of Chalk. Not a bit of it the old place is still rammed and at least half the crowd are still stood up by race 4 even if they are seeing double.

We are in the era of big Saturdays where top racecourses can stage fixtures when they feel like it and as punters we need to focus on the fact we are going to be having lots of bets on a Saturday and sometimes hardly any for the rest of the week. We need the appropriate mindset for this challenge which can take a battering on a bad day. When shortlisting for days like this I often find up to ten races on the list on a busy Saturday today that shortlist was 15 races. Does that even qualify as a shortlist Wilson the hapless BetFan Towers Caretaker shouts from his tea break?

For once the half whit has a point and if you think there is a high quality Ascot Card as well a Punter/Tipster could easily get dizzy.

The best solution for me is the old adage the best horses in the best races and I will shortlist down on quality, does this mean winners will be missed? of course but overall it’s the best policy for these bumper days.

So on that logic lets go to the best horse in the best race which is the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket where the ground is super quick. 4.35 is the time and a high quality field assembles but they will all have to go to beat Limato who has everything in his favour here. The veteran Trainer Henry Candy won with his other Sprinting Star Twilight Son at Ascot but Limato is his ace in the pack and can win well at a juicy 6/1 with Ladbrokes.

Channel 4 are showing 10 live races so join my race club this morning we had an agonising 20/1 second yesterday at Newmarket coming after a 16/1 winner recently so big priced winners are what we do. Strap yourself down refuse all offers to help others and watch one of the best days racing of the year.

Back next Saturday.
