Hi ,

Royal Ascot draws to a close after an exceptional week of racing on unseasonably soft ground. So lets look back and see what we have learned.

1 - It really is good news that Racing is moving to ITV and that with the exception of the brilliant Nick Luck this Channel 4 team is put out to grass or sent to work at a call centre. After years of broadcasting Tania Stevenson still can’t string a sentence together and Rishi Persaud’s post race interviews have reached an all time low in cringeworthy and inane levels. He makes Derek Thompson seem like Jeremy Paxman and Ryan Moore at one point appeared to completely blank him and ride off after one too many of Persaud’s fave question “So when will we see this fellow next then?”

It really is time for a change even if ITV have to start with the team from Rainbow and have Zippy in the Betting Ring with special guests Sooty and Sweep providing pre race selections and tips “What’s that Sooty you’ve laid the favourite?"

2 - Ryan Moore may be the best Jockey in the World but he has had a week to forget with a couple of stinkers thrown in particularly on The Gurkha who he left a mountain to climb and will not shortlist for his career highlights DVD.

3 - When it comes to riding Ascot Dettori is the Governor and the sometimes irritating Little Italian was in stupendous form all week. Dettori lives for the big occasion these days and this place brings him to life more than any other venue. He will go on for a few years and is not declining yet.

4 - When it’s soft at Ascot you must be near the pace as you simply cannot make ground up from the back. Some jockeys don’t appear to watch other races and repeat tactics that aren’t working.

5 - Small syndicates really can compete with the big boys as Quiet Reflection proved in yesterday’s Commonwealth Cup for Karl Burke and his small syndicate who certainly knew how to celebrate.

Wins like this get right up the noses of the bigger operations and it was brilliant to see. Karl Burke has endured some tough times and been on the end of a ban that saw him lose his licence but he is back now alright and proved he is a very talented operator.

So it all finishes today on going that will still have plenty of dig in it. The highlight is the 4.20 Diamond Jubilee Stakes a Group 1 over 6 furlongs and a truly International field has turned up. The fave is Magical Memory who is two from two this year and no doubt is an improving sprinter. We then have Twilight Son who won a Group 1 last year but the concern for him must be the form of his veteran Trainer Henry Candy who has hardly had a winner all season. The horse I’m going with is the forgotten horse of the field the Northern Raider Mattmu. Mattmu was beaten half a length by Magical Memory on his comeback run and then found rock hard ground at York against him. He is flying at present and Paddy Powers 25/1 is one of the value each way bets of the year.

At the Simon Holden Racing Club we so nearly landed a monster plunge on day 1 when we piled into Qewy at 40/1 who was just beat in second. We’ve had Usherette land a max win and another second at 25/1, we bet at big prices most services can only dream of. Bet with the Club and be part of it and you will be part of some of the biggest Gambles in Racing.

Have a great last day.

Back next Saturday.
