BEWARE - Do YOU Bet On Horses At Chelmsford?

By High Roller

I never consider selections nowadays at Chelmsford as I think the surface has too much variation and Hughie Morrison made comments which have been widely acknowledged as true.

This course has never been out of the news firstly as Great Leigh's Racecourse and now as Chelmsford City Racecourse situated in Essex. The place has always been subject to controversy as far as I am concerned.

All weather surfaces can vary in speed of surface. Standard, Fast, Slow are some descriptions which could be used to provide track users with an idea of going. However Hughie Morrison made comments, justified too, after a September meeting at Chelmsford.

Hughie said that the course always described the surface as Standard Going but after one meeting in September he said " the going at the meeting is around 72lbs quicker than the slowest going ever declared at the course". The 72lbs can be said to be the difference between Firm going and Good to Soft going...so quite a difference BUT the Course Officials gave the going as Standard but Hughie insisted that night was the quickest surface he had ever seen there.

Variations in the speed of a surface can make huge differences to the speed and stamina requirements of a participating horse whether on turf or all weather. Trainers would not run horses who were unsuited just to tests of speed. Times were significantly quicker when Hughie made his comments. The track was 'lightning' quick that evening says a friend who was also there.

It's not just Chelmsford who don't give the Going Report accurately. Lots of tracks seem to have a problem ascertaining the correct going. Could we say that Chelmsford appear one of the worst Offenders?

So what did the Clerk of the Course have to say? Worrying words...he took the word of jockeys....what a load of tripe...jockeys can ride but cannot tell you exactly what the going is that's why we have stopwatches and carefully surveyed distances to manage that.

So over to you BHA...what do you think?.....Comment from BHA.."After considering report of Clerk of Course no further action required"....don't they just make you ill? In a sport where accuracy of data in very important Who is ensuring Standards are up to the mark in this area?

Do the BHA take this matter seriously...apparently not. My suggestion is don't consider backing at Chelmsford until someone does something about. You need accurate going reports both as a punter ad trainer. Chelmsford is no longer under consideration by y service Exchange Profits.

Hope you all found this useful please take it onboard.
