Chris Froome is the current favourite to win the Tour de France for the third year in succession and fourth time in total but Alberto Contador and Nairo Quintana are the each way bets. Richie Porte could start the race as favourite on July 1st but he looks too short for a rider who has never won the Tour but still gets the vote. Mark Cavendish has been ill and might not be selected but should win several stages if riding.
The Tour de France in terms of crowds in attendance attracts more people than any other sporting event around the world. In effect it is a cycle race around France involving 22 teams each with nine riders. They compete for the Yellow Jersey which is worn by the race leader and winner. Other classifications include most points, King of the Mountains and young rider. Each classification has a different coloured jersey which the leader wears throughout the stages.
