Punchestown 2017 The Best Festival Yet - High Roller

On Tuesday 25th April to Saturday 20th April the Festival of racing at Punchestown Racecourse takes place. This year will more than likely be the biggest and best Festival ever according to the Racecourse Administration.

Apart from the brilliant racing there are loads of events and completions for racegoers to participate in whether watching or taking part. The whole of the racing is National Hunt racing over hurdles and fences or Bumper races on the Flat with no obstacles.

All the major Irish trainers have lots of entries. All the leading Irish owners have lots of entries...mainly surrounding Gigginstown Stud and JP McManus who seem certain to battle things out for Leading Owner at Punchestown 2017.

On Tuesday the opening day the main race is The Champion Chase where English raider Fox Norton could have a leading chance alongside Un De Sceaux from Willie Mullins yard if they both run. I don't think I can split them if they both go for this race.

Wednesday sees the Punchestown Gold Cup where I think one has to fancy Sizing John if he runs after being victorious in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March. Difficult to oppose Sizing John but beware that some horses don't reproduce their form after Cheltenham. The only way is to watch and see as I think odds will be far too short if Sizing John actually runs.

Thursday sees the main race as The Champion Stayers Hurdle where we wait with interest to see who is declared to run. I the entries are Apples Jade, Unowhatimeanharry, Nichols Canyon, Artic Fire, Lil Rockefeller and numerous other entries. I fancy Unowhatimeanharry to recapture his form and get back to winning ways after a costly defeat at Cheltenham.

On Friday the Champion Hurdle is the main race and JP McManus would like nothing better than winning this race again. He has a lot of possible runners but Buveur D'Air may be looking for Cheltenham, Aintree and Punchestown treble.....unusually very difficult to achieve.

The final day is on Saturday where highlight is the AES 4yo Hurdle a Group1 race over two miles. All the top yards, owners and trainers have entries. A competitive looking day.
