Declan's Irish Focus - Aintree Grand National Preview!

Just a week to go to that magical event, the Randox Health Grand National, the race that holds magnetic appeal on both sides of the Irish Sea.

Here we'll just have a quick run through some of the Irish contenders who bid to follow in the hoof prints of Rule The World.

CARLINGFORD LOUGH 33/1 Top weight but a class act, a Galway Plate winner who kicked on to win the Irish Gold Cup twice. Could be switched to the Boylesports Irish Grand National but deserves respect whichever option he takes.

ALECHI INIOS 66/1 A summer horse and a good one, but being set a mighty task by the handicapper here.

ROI DES FRANCS 66/1 A decent stayer, handles any ground, a lively outsider.

FOXROCK 25/1 One time class act revived by cross country and hunter chases this season. Big fences could spook him, but certainly no pushover if he takes to them.

WOUNDED WARRIOR 66/1 A long time since this fellow excelled, and he hasn't at all fulfilled exciting early expectations.

MAGGIO 50/1 Hard to figure. Generally average but has finished third and first on his last two visits to this track so is certainly getting to like the place.

CAUSE OF CAUSES 14/1 Cheltenham clearly suits him big time, and uses the cross country race there as his prep for this unique test, as did stablemate Silver Birch ten years ago. Eight in this two years ago, not sure the race really suits.

UCELLO CONTI 20/1 Sixth in this race last year, could be a lot closer this time, looks a major player.

PLEASANT COMPANY 20/1 Ruby Walsh will be be bidding for a third Grand National aboard this fellow and the combination make big appeal.

VICS CANVAS 50/1 - An excellent third in this last year, but has had a Lord Lucan like profile since and others preferred.

LORD WINDERMERE 50/1 Hasn't won since his Gold Cup victory three years ago and hard to fancy, but then not many fancied him that day either!

MEASUREOFMYDREAMS 50/1 Nightmare form this season and has really struggled since leaving Willie Mullins.

RAZ DE MAREE 40/1 Flopped in this four years ago but a much tougher nut now. Welsh National runner up could make the frame here too.

STELLAR NOTION 66/1 Massive improvement since joining Henry de Bromhead this season. Quietly fancied and his price looks too big.

ROGUE ANGEL 33/1 Could lightning strike two years in a row for Mouse Morris? Last year's Irish National winner hasn't set the world alight since, dry ground would help.

THUNDER AND ROSES 33/1 Mouse has another former Irish National winner here but this fellow seems to preserve his best for Fairyhouse.

BLESS THE WINGS 66/1 Just pipped in the Irish National last year and second in the cross country at Cheltenham. Decent sort when things go his way.

It's very unlikely any of the other Irish entries will make the cut.

* I was surprised to see that Apple's Jade is not going to Aintree where to my mind she had an excellent chance of beating Champion Hurdle hero Buveur D'Air in the Betway Aintree Hurdle, particularly with the two and a half miles trip.

She really excelled at the Liverpool track last year, indeed you could argue it was her best ever display, so all the more reason to try her luck there once more.

Instead she is to be kept to targets at home, presumably at the Punchestown Festival. Could it be that Gigginstown are providing extra ammunition to Gordon Elliott in his title battle with Willie Mullins? Surely not.

* Another very profitable week, and we had three out of three winning bets at Limerick on Thursday. Lachares 5/1 (won 7/2); Twiss's Hill each way 11/1 (2nd 6/1) and Mortal 9/4.

Other recent gems included Anseanachai Cliste 11/1 (w 8/1), Supreme Steel 8/1 (w 7/1); Czabo 8/1; Tennessee Waltz 6/1 (w 7/2); St Stephens Green 7/4 (w 5/4) and Great Field 5/6 (w 4/11).
