Saturday's FREE Tip Is Ready...

31st October 2015

,

It was certainly a case of reeling back the years to see Peter Chapple-Hyam winning the Racing Post Trophy and no doubt the bookies led the celebrations as Marcel was 33/1.

For a horse that was snapped up for 26,000gns he's certainly proving quite a bargain for owner Paul Hancock.

While the Racing Post is often a signpost to Derby glory, the 2,000 Guineas looks a much more realistic target.

And by the sounds of it, he's likely to go to Newmarket without a prep race.

It was not Frankie Dettori's finest hour as it was clear from a relatively early stage that Foundation had a lot to do.

With hindsight he probably should have tried to switch wide but it was a gamble either way.

Waiting for gaps to appear can appear a wildly optimistic option with hindsight.

But of course had they appeared and he won he would have been hailed as a tactical genius and praised for his ice cool composure!

It really is snakes and ladders sometimes.

The praise he got after the Arc was a bit over the top, but then some of the criticism last week over cooked.

Pre race tactics played a part.

John Gosden and Dettori felt Foundation needed cover having been a bit free at Newmarket and free and buzzy on the gallops last week.

Perhaps the horse just wasn't at his best either way but take nothing from the winner who showed real acceleration when grabbing a decisive advantage.

On Sunday we had a pretty tame ending to the Irish season at Leopardstown.

Silver Concorde swooped late for Leigh Roche and Dermot Weld to bag the Tote November Handicap beating Guard Of Honour right on the line.

Last year's Cheltenham Champion Bumper winner undoubtedly has a touch of class.

It was tough on trainer George Baker as Guard Of Honour has been pipped right on the line in both the Irish Cesarewitch and the November Handicap.

The Concorde ran only twice over hurdles last season, and finished a respectable fourth to Nichols Canyon in the Deloitte.

He was a beaten odds on jolly in his maiden hurdle at the Leopardstown Christmas meeting, but he'll be going for a similar contest at the Foxrock track this Yuletide.

By all accounts he's simply skimming over the hurdles at home now and it will take something special to beat him this time.

Mind you, Willie Mullins seems to produce something special nearly every week.

The JNwine.com Champion Chase is a huge attraction at Down Royal today.

Don Cossack will be sent off a long odds on jolly and rightly so.

Let's hope that whoever triumphs will fare better subsequently that did Kauto Stone, who won this at 4/1 in 2012 for Paul Nicholls and Daryl Jacob.

Not only has he never won a race in the three years since, but he's never come near.

Now trained by Ben Pauling, he ran in a handicap chase at Stratford on Thursday off a mark of 134.

He fell at the third last when already back pedaling and was sent off at 16/1.

To me it's very sad to see once great horses running - and failing - at a very modest level.

His half brother Kauto Star also won today's Down Royal feature - twice in fact, 2008 and 2010 - but he didn't fare too badly afterwards!

Back next Saturday.
