The Thistlecrack news is a crushing blow for all concerned and again brings into question the wisdom or otherwise of ante-post betting on jump racing.
There is no simple answer here.
Obviously this season with Don Cossack, Annie Power, Faugheen, Min, Sprinter Sacre and Coneygree all missing the Cheltenham Festival the bookies are already miles ahead on their ante-post books.
Don't knock that, that's why they can offer serious value on horses away from the obvious.
But one golden rule I have. Never, ever back short priced Cheltenham bankers in early or mid season.
Isn't there something odd about taking 6/4 on a horse in December that could be the same price - or even better - on the day?
However now we're in that in between time, the Festival looming, and Non Runner No Bet offers all over the place.
Now we're in business. So let's look at some of the current market leaders.
