3rd June 2015

Hi %%First Name%%,

After the recent allegations regarding bribery and corruption issues within F.I.F.A. it was great to see a superb game of football in the Cup Final with Arsenal playing some of the most exciting stuff I have seen for years.

Villa to their credit tried to make a game of it but were completely outplayed by the rampant Gunners. I believe if Wenger adds a goalkeeper and a central defender to the squad they are certainly capable of running Chelsea close next season.

This Saturday we have the Champions League final in Berlin between Barcelona and Juventus which should also be a cracker as when Barca turn on the magic they are even more entertaining to watch than the Arsenal.

All roads lead to Epsom later this week with the next two Classics to be unravelled. With an eye on the weather I sent my brother up to Surrey to walk the course and he says it's on the softer side of good at present. Midweek is expected to be warm and dry but thunderstorms have been forecast on Friday.

So with all this in mind I'm going to take a stab at the Classic double for Howies Hottie. Remember 2 singles and the famous each way double.

In the Derby I'm on Success Days from the Irish yard of Ken Condon. The colt won the Derristown stud trial by 10 lengths and this was the race won by Sindar and Galileo before their Derby victories.

There is a line of form regarding Carbon Dating who was beaten 12 lengths by Gleneagles and 15 lenghths by Success Days which makes interesting reading. The trainer says he is at his best on soft ground and if the forecast is right on Friday the 20/1 with Hills looks far too big.

I found the Oaks easier to fathom after watching a recording of the Irish 1000gns where Jessica Harringtons Jack Naylor flew home from the back to get 3rd place. The filly should improve over the longer trip and at about 8/1 looks a value bet.

Well good luck with that double but did I hear someone say it's hard enough to find winners never mind forecast the bloody weather!

Its been another profitable month for my 80/20 Super Bets service and that means a profit every month since we launched with Betfan. Yes of course there are losers and some that don't even make the frame however if you want consistency this is your best bet.

Also don't forget we give you a one month free trial to check it out.

EYE-CATCHERS

They were in sparkling form last week with Outback Ruler 11/2, So Beloved 10/1 and Laviniad 7/2 all winning and I told you not to miss Laviniad when he ran in Ireland.

THIS WEEKS EYE-CATCHERS

FLAT RACING

Simenon trainer W.Mullins - He needed his run at Sandown last week and it was just a prep for his big day which will be the Ascot Gold Cup.

Deauville Prince trainer T.Dascombe - The gelding finds a mile too far and is well handicapped when dropped in trip.

Moonrise Landing trainer R.Beckett - The filly found 2 miles stretching her stamina however she has lots of ability so keep the faith.

So Beloved trainer D.O'Meara - A very easy winner last time despite meeting trouble in running. This eye-catcher has lots more to offer.

Llewellyn trainer D.Carroll - Another who doesn't quite get a mile. This gelding is very well handicapped and when dropped in trip on a softer surface must be followed.

Secret Lightning trainer M.Appleby - Failed to see out the 10 furlongs at Ripon yesterday and when returned to a mile the horse will be competitive.

Black Caesar trainer P.Hide - Looked all over the winner at Brighton until faltering close home. A drop in trip should see him in the winners enclosure.

Back next Wednesday have a good week and be lucky.

Howard Davis-Shaw.

This Weeks Golf News - Past, Present and Future of Golf Contest Jack’s Memorial

The recent history of US golf meets the present and the future in the Memorial tournament on the PGA Tour. Tiger Woods and Justin Rose are former winners of this prestigious event playing this week and Jordan Spieth competes as he continues to hone his game ahead of the US Open. Both Woods and Rose have won the second major of the season and the world number two is looking to emulate them and keep alive his hopes of achieving the calendar year Grand Slam that was beyond Tiger.

Spieth would probably swap ten Memorials for one US Open such is the relevance of winning majors. Even at an early stage of his career he is one of an elite group of players who plan their schedules around the four biggest weeks of the year. Only Rory McIlroy is above the US Masters champion in the world rankings and Spieth will need to win at least one more major in 2015 to overhaul McIlroy this year.

The 40th Memorial is as always being held on the course that Jack Nicklaus conceived and built. This historic championship is very much Jack’s tournament and as well as acting as host each year he has also won the event twice. Muirfield Village has hosted several other high profile events including the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup. It is a course that generally favours the long hitters since the fairways are wide and forgiving. However, there is still plenty of trouble including water on 12 holes.

Past results suggest that it is important to have a short game that is in good order to contend. The bentgrass greens are below average in size and are very quick making putting and scrambling testing. The toughest holes are mostly par 4s and the two closing holes are both demanding. The 18th features a creek down the left-hand side of the fairway and a green that is well protected by bunkers. The four par 5s are reachable in two for most players.

The Memorial has a smaller field than usual so tee times are not crucial in normal weather conditions. However, the tournament regularly has weather interruptions so it’s still worth checking the forecast. Poor weather makes the event more demanding and that often produces a high quality winner. The event has a history of champions who have won majors and players from the top ten in the world rankings. Ideally your selections should be long hitters with a good touch on and around the greens.

Six men have won the tournament more than once and five of those won majors, including three of the best players in the history of the game in Woods, Nicklaus and Tom Watson. Hale Irwin and Greg Norman are two-times champions who also won more than one major and Kenny Perry is the exception as he never won a regular major but has won three senior major championships. Nine of the 39 previous winners were not born in the United States. Rose and Carl Pettersson are the only winners from Europe.

Nicklaus has not made any significant changes to the course in the last year. However, the 18th has been modified due to drainage problems and includes a new cluster of bunkers. A new tee has increased the distance of the final hole by 40 yards and anyone needing a par to win will face a tough challenge. The test comes at the end of a course that was the hardest par 72 in a non-major in 2012 and 2013. Decent weather led to relatively low scores last year though the winning score of 13 under was the same as the six year average.

Hideki Matsuyama is the defending champion. He is seen as a potential future major champion so upheld the reputation of the tournament of producing winners from the higher echelons of the game. He led the field in strokes gained putting, accuracy and proximity to the hole. He was only average on the par 5s in an event in which good scoring on the long holes is important. Matsuyama was the first victor since the inaugural event in 1976 to win in his first appearance.

Woods has won five Memorials with his last win in 2012 but he is unlikely to be a factor this week. He is now outside the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time since 1996.There were encouraging signs of the old Tiger in the Masters but he was not a factor in the Players Championship. His major winning days are surely now behind him as he is now uncompetitive even in regular tournaments. Injuries have blighted the last few years of his career and other distractions have not helped. The baton of being the best player in the world has now been passed to McIlroy.

Rose is currently at number six in the world rankings and won the Memorial in 2010. He recorded the best score since Woods winning mark in 2000 and won the event by three strokes. Rose is in the top 40 for driving distance and greens in regulation and that profile should see him get in the mix this week. He has now won on the PGA Tour in each of the last six years and won the 2013 US Open. Winning that championship again is currently his main objective and will be looking for positives this week.

At the height of his powers Woods held all four major at the same time but never won each in the same season. He won the last three of 2000 and the Masters the following year to achieve the Tiger Slam. McIlroy and Spieth have the ability to keep winning majors and are the only potential winners of the true Grand Slam. If Spieth wins the US Open the pressure and media attention at the Open at St Andrews in July will be intense and some unpredictable weather could scupper his chances. Despite McIlroy and Spieth’s quest to win majors they would love to win Nicklaus’s tournament.
