Good Morning ,

Mshawish Frankie’s Hope For a Fourth Dubai World Cup

California Chrome is a worthy favourite for the Dubai World Cup but Mshawish should not be dismissed, the mount Frankie Detorri hopes will give him a fourth win in the race. The one mile two furlongs dirt race is the richest in the world and is the final race on Dubai World Cup night which features huge prize funds and the best horses in the sport. It is the United Arab Emirates version of the Breeder’s Cup in the States.

The Dubai World Cup is a Group 1 flat race held at Meydan in UAE that has reverted back to dirt after being run on an artificial surface since 2010. The race distance of 10 furlongs is seen as the best test of a thoroughbred as getting the trip requires a combination of speed and stamina. Four year olds and older Northern Hemisphere horses are eligible and horses a year younger from the Southern Hemisphere can run. The discrepancy is due to the different racing calendars in the two halves of the world.

No horse has won the race more than once. Godolphin have most wins as owners with six which is appropriate as that group’s main investor is Sheikh Mohammed who is the Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. Godolphin’s main trainer is Saeed bin Suroor who has won the race a record seven times between 1999 and 2015. US jockey Jerry Bailey has ridden the winner four times and that is the record for a jockey.

Dettori won three Dubai Gold Cups for Godolphin: Dubai Millennium (2000), Moon Ballad (2003) and Electrocutionist (2006). He gave up his high-profile job with the organisation in 2012 as his life began to unravel. However, he has got his career back on track over the last year and is now talking about riding for at least another five years. Given an injury free spell he could well retire as the fifth winning most jockey in British racing. He needs another 170 winners to get into the top five.

Frankie has a retainer with the Qatari racing syndicate and will get rides for John Gosden who trained Dettori’s second Derby winner, Golden Horn. The Italian has come along way from being banned from the sport for a drugs offence and appearing on Celebrity Big Brother with Razor Ruddock and other Z-listers. Gary Stevens and Kieran Fallon rode beyond the age of 50 and Dettori is fit and youthful for his age. In theory he could win more Dubai World Cups and overtake Bailey as the most successful jockey in the history of the race.

Mshawish is the third favourite to win the Dubai World Cup and Dettori’s fourth win but for this time for Al Shaqab Racing based in Qatar and not the Dubai backed Godolphin organisation. There would be a certain irony about Dettori winning his old employers race while working for one of their closest rivals in global thoroughbred racing. Mshawish has mainly raced on turf but was switched to dirt at the end of last year with the Dubai World Cup in mind.

The horse won one of the best trials in America for the World Cup and the form is impressive, though beating California Chrome and Godolphin’s Frosted looks a difficult assignment. Mshawish has never run over ten furlongs but arrives in Dubai in good form. Dettori’s experience and jockeyship could be worth five pounds and that could be crucial at the line but California Chrome will be a tough nut to crack.

That horse’s trainer reports that his charge is several lengths better than when finishing second, beaten by less than three lengths by Prince Bishop last year. California Chrome won the first two legs of the American Triple Crown in 2014. He was only fourth in the Belmont Stakes so did not achieve the treble that American Pharoah won last year. California Chrome is the favourite to win the race that identifies the best horse in the world and the winner is a true champion.

California Chrome was bred from a stud fee of $2,500 and is not owned by millionaires and Arab oil magnates. His modest upbringing will prove that the dream of owning a world beater can become a reality for owners of modest wealth. Up against Frosted it will be a case of David against Goliath and the neutrals will hope that the underdog wins. Frosted would be Godolphin Racing’s third win in five years of their own race. However, for a number of reasons Mshawish and Dettori would be appropriate and very popular well backed winners.
