Bet365 Gold Cup

24th April 2014 17:24:52

I briefly met Paul Nicholls at Aintree just after the Grand National as he was walking through the enclosure from where I was watching the racing with the owner of Tidal Bay, Graham Wiley. I asked Nicholls if he would now retire the horse after he was brought down in the National and he replied by saying there was the Whitbread.

The interesting thing about this brief conversation is that Nicholls did not refer to the race as the bet365 Gold Cup. The handicap chase run over two circuits at Sandown at the end of April will always be known as the Whitbread. Their sponsorship must be one of the most successful in sport as years after they last backed the race it is still known as the Whitbread.

Bet365 are a massively successful dotcom business, privately owned by the Coates family and providing 2000 jobs both locally in Stoke and in other parts of the world including Gibraltar. They advertise regularly during half time of football matches and have created a brand based on a wide variety of odds and live betting opportunities.
