It’s Now All About England Winning The World Cup

Today’s League Two playoff final between Coventry and Exeter is the last fixture in the UK domestic season and then it’s all about the World Cup and England’s preparation. The value of meeting Nigeria and Costa Rica in friendlies in the context of the World Cup is debatable. England play Tunisia and Panama in their first two group fixtures and those teams are 30th and 31st in the betting to win the World Cup and only Saudi Arabia are a bigger price.

The bookies prices suggest England are up against two of the three weakest teams in the competition but we know it won’t be plain sailing and the final game against Belgium could be more about which team finishes top of the group. In theory England should embark on that match with two wins in the bag but experience tells us something will go wrong. ENGLAND are 5/4 with Ladbrokes to win Group G.

The first two Classics in Ireland didn’t go to form and Aidan O’Brien didn’t train the winner of either despite having fancied runners. The Epsom Derby on Saturday is the most prestigious Flat race in the world. It’s the most significant race for the breeding industry and the ultimate test of a thoroughbred. O’Brien won the race last season with Wings Of Eagles who was one of his less fancied runners, He has now won the English Derby six times and has the odds-on favourite in this year’s race. Roaring Lion came into the picture by winning the Dante Stakes which is one of the recognised trials. However, SAXON WARRIOR looks solid at 5/6 with Betfair.

Rafael Nadal has won the French Open 10 times which is a record for any Grand Slam tournament. The King of Clay has a game ideally suited to the surface and he is a massive favourite to prevail in Paris again. Nadal has lost just one match in four tournaments during the European clay court season and is the best clay court player in the history of the sport. You won’t get rich backing him to win the French Open again but sport is not always an exact science. ALEXANDER ZVEREV could cause an upset and you can back him at 7/1 with William Hill to win the French Open.
