Johnson And Kaymer Pay 322/1 In A Double!
The Northern Trust Open is the first tournament in the FedEx Cup playoffs and the quality of the field makes the event akin to a major. When the best compete against the best there is usually a quality winner from the top drawer. Dustin Johnson has the skills’ profile and form to win the tournament for the first time but 15th in total on the PGA Tour. Johnson has been in decent form without threatening to win.
The field is made up of 120 of the 125 qualifiers who have made the FedEx Cup. The next cut is at 100 players at the end of this week. The field drops to 70 players for the penultimate event and 30 qualifying for the season-ending Tour Championship. The player with the most points wins the FedEx Cup and $10 million and the defending champion is Rory McIlroy. He plays this week despite suggesting after the PGA Championship that he might take a sabbatical until the start of next week.
The purpose of the FedEx Cup is to attract the best players who are eliminated or progress. Even the wealthiest player would want to plat for $10 million and the tournament is always well supported. The five players who have not taken their place include Sergio Garcia who finally won his first major at the Masters Tournament. He may join later on but maybe he has over indulged in enjoying his fruits of his labour. There is no reserves procedure so 120 players go to post.
The tournament is being played on a composite course at Glen Oaks in New York State. The track is debuting this week so there is no course form to assess. The rough is penal but it skirts wide fairways and anyone ho gets in trouble off the tee deserves all the course can throw them. It’s easy from to green so could develop into ting contest and that would suit Johnson. He leads the Tour in strokes-gained putting and from the tee. Johnson has made the top 20 in his last three starts and is fit again.
The course is one of the longer par 70’s on the Tour. Many trees have been destroyed by hurricanes and that has left wide and generous fairways. The course puts a premium on distance over accuracy and this type of test suits Johnson. Scrambling is another skill and Johnson has all the attributes for good scoring this week. He has won three Playoff events and three times in 2017. Johnson can add another title to his collection which would be a great start for him in the Playoffs.
The world number one went to the pinnacle of the game after a great run of form leading up to the Masters. However, a freak accident in the week of the tournament meant he was not able to compete at Augusta. The 2016 US Open champion has had a disappointing overall year in the majors and has not looked like winning one this season. Johnson has a great deal in his favour this week and is a potential winner.
The Made In Denmark tournament has a second rate feeling about it and all the best players are elsewhere. Thomas Bjorn is playing his 500th tournament on the European Tour and its apt it is taking places in the country of his birth. He has now reached the veteran stage and a fellow dame makes more appeal. Martin Kaymer has won two majors and would lap this field at his best. The German scores well for the accuracy stats and the course is more about accuracy than distance. Kaymer has the class to win at this level and the cream should come to the top.
Johnson and Kaymer have won the US Open and that is the most demanding event in the sport. Johnson is up against a world-class while Kaymer has things a lot easier. Both players can win this week and the Transatlantic Double pays 322/1.
