If there is a better Saturday for punting then nobody told me about it. The July Cup the final day of Newmarket’s mid summer jamboree is complimented by my local gaffe York staging Smiths day with the Smiths cup at the centre.

York will be full of gangs drinking, swearing and generally being anti social and that’s just the women but one things for sure the racing on the Knavesmire will be super competitive.

The big race itself is one of the season’s richest handicaps and has its usual high quality field of top class one mile 2 furlong handicappers. The straight is long and galloping and wide so there should never be hard luck stories at York. Strangely for a galloping track history shows us in these events it pays to be up with the leaders not loitering at the back. Nobody has been able to convince Jamie Spencer that this is the case and people have given up trying.

Richard Fahey has always been a man to fear here and this is the track he targets with his top handicappers. One horse who we have not seen this year is Garcia who landed some big touches for connections last year before flopping on his final start. I understand the horse was feeling the effects of his winning run by then and that we should ignore that run. He has been prepared for this and I’m not concerned at all he comes here first time out as Fahey can get any horse fit at his excellent facilities. He is still on a winning mark and has course form. Jack Garrity takes the ride and Sky Bet go 25/1 which looks just what the Dr ordered.
