They make for fascinating listening and whilst they don’t always agree what we can guarantee you is some Big Priced Selections to add to your enjoyment of the Greatest Flat Racing Festival of them all!

Max Dynamite Can Scupper O’Brien/Moore Double

Royal Ascot is the most ridiculous race meeting in the world and also the most fabulous. Race goers dress like their grandparents in uncomfortable clothing and then something like the St James Palace Stakes brings together the winners of the 2,000 Guineas of England, Ireland and France. Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien are big favourites to be leading jockey and trainer and the combination cannot be opposed.

National Hunt racing has Cheltenham and the Flat has Ascot in the middle of June. It’s penned in the Queen’s diary once the dates are announced but for about 500 years it’s been a permanent fixture in the same week every year. Royal Ascot is the most cosmopolitan meeting in the world and horses from eight nations will be competing this year. The meeting is at the same time an anarchism but an example of keeping the customer happy in the modern consumer era. Nobody complains too much about Royal Ascot and the format of six races on each of five days looks set in stone.

Despite the meeting being more a social occasion than a sporting event for many people the actual racing over five days is the best anywhere. There are prestigious races run in every jurisdiction but no other meeting can match the quality from the Tuesday to Saturday in the week before Wimbledon. Euro 2016 is the biggest football tournament after the World Cup but for quality and prestige in any sport Royal Ascot is way ahead of anything else, accept maybe Cheltenham in March. Even the bookies wear formal attire for Ascot and trainers who get close to the horses dress in a peculiar way. However, it’s still fundamentally about which horse runs the fastest.

The highlight and most sought after race of the week is the Gold Cup on Thursday. The day was called Ladies Day centuries before the Friday of the Grand National meeting at Aintree branded the concept which has been taken on board by many tracks. The Gold Cup is run over two miles four furlongs which is bizarre for a Flat race. Order Of St George for O’Brien will take some beating but Max Dynamite could win the prize for Ireland and Willie Mullins who is a rare trainer in having prepared winners for Ascot and Cheltenham.

Order Of St George has won his last four races but at no further than 14 furlongs. The horse started a career that has included 10 races as a miler and is unproven over two miles never mind the extra four furlongs of the Ascot Gold Cup. Max Dynamite was second in the Melbourne Gold Cup last year which is a Group race disguised as a handicap. Going down to Australia is on the agenda again but the horse could win at Ascot next week as a stepping stone. To be proven over two miles around Flemington is a great trial for the stayer’s championship of the season which this year is titled “the Gold Cup in Honour of The Queen’s 90th Birthday”.

The St James Palace Stakes on the first day on Tuesday is a showdown between The Gurkha, Awtaad and Galileo Gold who won 2,000 Guineas at Chantilly, the Curragh and Newmarket. The first named was the most impressive in the French version, stepping up from maiden company to enter the Derby picture. The distance of one mile four furlongs was deemed to be unsuitable so The Gurkha comes to Ascot to contest the unofficial championship race over one mile. If winning he would score for O’Brien and as yet an unnamed jockey which will probably be Moore.

The ante post double on The Gurkha and Order Of St George pays about 4/1 and would provide two winners for the O’Brien and Moore team. However, Willie Mullins can scupper that bet with Max Dynamite in the Gold Cup and irritate British Flat trainers just as he does their colleagues over jumps by completing a Cheltenham Festival and Royal Ascot double.
