United States Are Nailed On to Win The Solheim Cup

The Solheim Cup is the women’s version of the Ryder Cup and this year the matches are being played in the United States. In 14 stagings of the event the away side has prevailed four times and Europe are unlikely to make it five. On accumulated world rankings the US has a stronger side and the camaraderie of the Europeans will not be enough to compensate for the difference in class.

Golf is a popular betting sport and the Ryder Cup is a major betting event. Bookmakers have odds for the Solheim Cup this week in addition to tournaments on the main Tours. Gabs Golf Tips is a new service with WIN that produced the goods during proofing. One of the highlights was an each-way bet on Matt Kuchar for the Open Championship which so nearly delivered a jackpot win.

This year’s Solheim Cup which runs from Friday to Saturday is being played at the West Des Moines course in Iowa. It is a par 73 track 6,894 yards in length which is quite short even for women’s golf. There are several risk and reward holes which make for exciting heads-to-head golf and the match situation will determine how each player approaches these holes.

The format replicates the scoring in the Ryder Cup. Each team has 12 players who compete in fourballs, foursomes and singles. There are 28 points on offer so the first to 14.5 wins the match. The US are the holders so if the match is tied the home team retain the Cup. They beat the Europeans by one point in Germany two years ago, which was the closest match in the history of the event.

The outright winner market is a three-way which includes the tie so you are not going to get rich if you back the winners. The United States can be backed at 2/5 which seems about right. Backing the US to win 15-13 or 16-12 is about 9/2 combined and that looks a better bet. On Solheim Cup experience and world rankings the Americans have a significant edge.

The European team features players ranked from 13 to 115 and the average ranking of their dozen is 59. The opposition are represented by players from 2 to 110 in the standings, at an average of 38. You would always back a player to beat somebody 21 lower in the rankings and that equates to the difference in class in this year’s Solheim Cup. The US side have played in 36 previous matches in total, 12 more than the players from Europe.

Home advantage, rankings and match experience are all positives for the US so a win in this year’s Solheim Cup by between 2 and 4 points is the call.
