The Royal Ascot Acca Could Fall At The Final Hurdle - Rick Elliott

There are five potential banker bets at Royal Ascot but the power of multiplying odds means the accumulator pays 24/1. The bet is gaining momentum and is now reaching the proportions of the infamous bets on a string of Willie Mullins' hotpots at the Cheltenham Festival. The bookies often get one of these horses beat and breathe a sigh of relief. However in this case the quintet of good things looks rock solid but lets not forget Annie Power and the fall at Cheltenham that saved bookies a fortune.

Royal Ascot is the most prestigious Flat meeting in the world and the most lucrative in the UK. Races like the Derby and Grand National are worth more but these are standalone contests. It's the sustained quality over five days that stands Royal Ascot apart. There are eight Group 1 races over the five days and 18 Group races in total. It is the one meeting in Britain and Ireland that justifies five days and the Queen has no problem with attending all week. There are six races each day and the Group 1 highlight is run at 4.20pm from Tuesday to Saturday.

The meeting is being covered by ITV for the first time. Its natural home was the BBC but the national broadcaster has given up on racing in a dereliction of duty. At least Royal Ascot is free to view and the ITV team are highly professional. It just seems incongruous to have advert breaks from racing that is as much a social and royal occasion as sporting event. The racing is the best in the world and brings together the best horses from Europe and further afield. There is television coverage in 200 countries.
