Juventus Will Be Running Around Cardiff With The Cup - Rick Elliott

Real Madrid are the slight favourites to win the Champions League but Juventus are equipped in all areas of the field to win the trophy for the first time since the 1995-96 season. They have only been champions of Europe one other time and that was after beating Liverpool in the final in 1985. That match is more remembered for events off the field at the Heysel Stadium and it was a hollow victory.

Juventus are one of just five clubs to have won each of the three main European trophies. Chelsea, Ajax, Bayern Munich and now Manchester United have also won the European Cup or Champions League, UEFA Cup or Europa League and Cup Winners Cup at least once. Juventus, Bayern and United are the only teams to have won both versions of the European Cup and the other two trophies. Liverpool have won eight European titles in total but they never won the Cup Winners' Cup and that competition has been abolished so winning all three is beyond them.

Real Madrid and Juventus are two of the superpowers of European football and amongst the wealthiest in the continent. There is a direct correlation between the size of a club's wage bill and their finishing position in the domestic league and progress in the Champions League. The competition is lucrative so the successful clubs can then attract the best players by paying the highest wages and the process continues. There are only about five clubs that are genuine contenders for the Champions League.
