Declans Eyecatchers - Future Irish Winners...

AMEDEO MODIGLIANI (Aidan O'Brien) A 20/1 shot ignored in the market on debut with serious money for his Ballydoyle stablemates Gustav Klimit (winner) and Bond Street (5th). He was a strong finishing third under Padraig Beggy. This 750,000 gns. yearling purchase is related to Coronet and Aussie Rules and is clearly very useful, but probably needs a mile or more to really shine.

BECKFORD (Gordon Elliott) If ace jumps trainer Elliott feels like a fish out of water at The Curragh then he had better start getting acclimatised. The Railway Stakes winner will be back for the Phoenix Stakes over track and trip next month where he will certainly set the standard.

CLONGOWES (Jim Bolger) After scoring over a mile and five at Down Royal, dropped down three furlongs to win again when beating off a host of challengers at Headquarters. Tough and probably still improving, he's certainly one to keep on the right side though he might not get away with it over anything less than a mile and a half in future.

MIZAAH (Kevin Prendergast) Just touched off in a Premier Handicap at The Curragh last week and the Topaz Mile, the big race on the Tuesday night of the Galway Festival, looks an obvious target. His evergreen trainer - who celebrated his 85th birthday this week - has a great record in that race.

NEW TERMS (Jim Bolger) Went into plenty of notebooks when a sweet Curragh debut second, but got badly boxed in when odds on at Listowel next time. Plain sailing at Fairyhouse on Wednesday though went sent off a generous 9/4 chance, the New Approach filly looks yet another to note from a stable already well blessed with exceptional juvenile talent.

ONLY MINE (Joe Murphy) Had a big weight advantage when just turning the tables on Gordon Lord Byron but it was still a noteworthy achievement to collect the scalp of that much travelled and prolific sprinter. Haydock Sprint Cup might be her next target.

THOMAS O'MALLEY (Joseph O'Brien) Was sent off the 9/2 jolly - despite the massive plunge on easy winner Zeftan - when taking a major step up in trip in the Apprentices Derby but only finished eight. There didn't seem to be any problem seeing out the mile and a half but almost certainly he needs quicker ground. It is a concern that after eleven outings he still hasn't won, but the longer trip and a faster surface could soon put that right.

PEARL OF THE WEST (Pat Fahy) A bit unlucky on her previous outing at Limerick, she got compensation at Gowran Park on Tuesday when beating a useful Dermot Weld filly, the odds on favourite Frima. Needs every yard of the mile and a half trip and would be interesting in the Cork Oaks which is not half as posh a race as the title implies. * The Irish Derby weekend proved another bonanza for us making it nine winning Festivals out of ten! And remember the Irish Oaks is next weekend.
