The Last Samuri Runs In National Prep Race at Doncaster

The most significant runner in Britain over the weekend could be The Last Samuri who runs a final prep race for the Grand National at Doncaster. All the Cheltenham Festival trials have taken place and there is now just over one week before the best race meeting in the world. There is a three week gap between Cheltenham and Aintree this year so some horses could be running at both meetings. 

The tracks differ so form from one meeting does not always translate to the other one. In fact some horses are more suited to a flat track like Aintree so miss the Festival and are targeted at the Grand National meeting. There are now nine Grade 1 races at Aintree and five more at Cheltenham but the gap in quality is closing. The facilities at Aintree have been transformed over the last 20 years and it is now an excellent sporting venue. In the 1970's the National was dying on its feet but Red Rum came along to save it.

The horse is the only three times winner of the National and the last multiple winner. Many Clouds could have added to the National he won in 2015 but that horse is now sadly no longer with us. In fact the horses that dominated the Gold Cup trial on Trials Day in Thistlecrack and Many Clouds will not race in the big one but at least Thistlecrack will gave another chance, though he won't be back on the track until Christmas due to a minor tendon injury.
